If the bunion is not too pronounced, it is sufficient to cut the long bone that leads to the big toe (the "first metatarsal") and to move the tendons and muscles to balance the equilibrium. If the bunion is more pronounced the long bone has to be parted and placed again into position. The position is fixed by tiny screws or thread. If the bunion is extremely pronounced, it also could be that the extra bone has to be shaved off to eliminate the bump.
After the surgery
No cast is normally needed after the surgery. No pressure should be put on the foot while healing which takes about 6 weeks. We recommend a special shoe during this period. To fit a regular shoe, it normally takes 3 weeks, however, it can take up to 6 months in the worst case.
